Judges Give Thumbs Up to NAR Rose Parade Float

By Stacey Moncrieff, Editor in Chief, REALTOR® magazine

Our float made national TV—and won an award to boot! I watched most of the Tournament of Roses Parade yesterday on NBC. That’s when I learned that the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® float, “Celebrating the Dream of Homeownership for 100 Years,” was an award winner. We won the Isabella Coleman Trophy for best presentation of color and color harmony through floral use. NBC commentators Nancy O’Dell and Al Roker also mentioned the 10,000 volunteers who helped put on all those flowers. What a job!

I have to say the float was even more beautiful than I expected. This Associated Press story includes one photo of the NAR float—but the photo doesn’t do it justice.

Here, from the L.A. Times, is a list of all the Rose Parade award winners.

Congratulations, REALTORS®!

Is there a photo of the NAR float that was taken from the front? It is hard to tell what it looks like taken from the back. I wasn't lucky enough to watch the parade, so I would appreciate more pictures of it, if that is possible, thank you.

As I watched the Rose Bowl parade I was very proud to be a part of NAR. The commercial breaks were outstanding. Thank you so much!

I missed it! What a pity! I'd like to add a photo to my website.

Our important message to the public is not clearly expressed on the float! We should have a Big "R" Logo and a bold message on the sides saying "Bound by Code of Ethics" to separate us from the rest and gain respect from the lay person.

So, where's the photo?

I never got to see it on our channel as it was most likely during a commercial. Can you find someone who may have taken a better photo so those that want to can put in on their websites?

It was so fun for me to actually work on decorating the NAR float on 12-27 evening with 35 other Realtors that shift. It wasn't picture perfect at that point. However, PFAR might have pictures. E-mail: admin@pfar.org

N.A.R. Parade Float Comes Full-Circle

Was it a coincidence that the National Association of Realtor’s float won the prestigious Isabel Coleman Award or was it perfectly fitting?

Isabel Coleman designed Rose Parade floats for over 50 years. She was the first female float designer, and one of the first to animate her floats. In fact, her signature lacy designs were portrayed by the 2009 National Association of Realtors float. So, it was fitting that this award be given to the NAR float.

In addition, Isabel was the daughter of Charles Victor Sturdevant I and sister of Charles Victor (Vic) Sturdevant II. The Sturdevant family ran Sturdevant Realty in Pasadena from 1904-1972. The family was actively involved in Pasadena and California Real Estate, as well as supporters of the Rose Parade, during that time. In fact, Vic Sturdevant was the Pasadena Association of Realtor’s, Realtor of the Year in 1950 or 1951. Enclosed is a photo of the family car participating in the 1904 Rose Parade. Isabel is positioned the center, back-seat.

This year, Julaine Sturdevant Waggoner, a fourth-generation Real Estate Broker with Wildasinn Group and Associates, helped decorate the beautiful, National Association of Realtor’s float, bringing this piece full-circle…perfectly fitting!
