Protecting Property Against Flooding

Floods can happen anywhere, at any time -- and damage to property can be costly. Certain measures can be taken, however, to lessen the impact of such a disaster. FEMA recommends that property owners and managers first identify the level of flood zone in which the property is located. With new products on the market such as "water-tight doors and hatches and flood gates in the form of floor and wall panels, prevention is more about shielding than revamping an older structure or modifying how new structures are built." Shields such as sand bags and plastic coverings are frequently used, too. In addition to these precautionary measures, FEMA recommends that property owners purchase flood insurance.
