New PAG on Professionalism, Posted by Dick
It’s been a while since my last update on the Inman Conference, but I assure that you we are really pushing hard to tackle some tough issues before the end of the year.
In fact, I recently appointed a new Presidential Advisory Group to consider how we can raise the professional standards for membership in NAR. NAR Past President Richard Mendenhall – a dear friend and one of the most well respected members of our organization – is leading this effort. The group will hold their first meeting in September, and will report their recommendations back to the leadership later this year.
We’ve heard a lot from you on this topic during the past couple of years. In fact, it’s one of the most often discussed topics of concern when we travel to state and local associations. I want you to know that we are working on it, and we will update you on the group’s efforts. In the meantime, I invite you to share your thoughts – What do you think the standards for NAR membership should be? – Dick Gaylord, 2008 NAR President

Hello President Gaylord,
Thanks so much for making this a top priority. I have been a major supporter of professionalism & being a Realtor - holding NAR membership is an honor. I have chaired our local association and PAR Professionalism task force for 2 years, as well as currently chairing PAR's Professional Standards for the 2nd time. Our membership into NAR, state level and local level should be respected - therefore making tougher admission should be acceoted. We have all been concerned with more stringent education classes and more regulation by the Real Estate Commissions. Making our intial education to enter the field of real estate is most important and once acquiring your license - being a member of the largest Trade association should not be an easy task. I commend the Appraisal industry - they have taken the step to push for the highest demand of their members and I think we should do the same. NAR is a priviledged group and those seeking to enter should be willing to accept the requirements to join. We should look at it as an honor to be a member and raise the standards to join. Any assistance I can be - I am more than willing. Thank you for your leadership & your efforts!

Dick..
I hope that you are able to do this! I have worked diligently through educational offerings to teach professionalism. Here's an interesting problem: The majority of the real estate commissions nationally will not approve professionalism for continuing education credits! I have spoken at ARELLO meetings in the past and have tried to do it again this year. In today's world they won't come for education - unless there is CE. My real estate etiquette course is a CRS elective. We have had to cancel 2 this year because of low attendance. How can I help you?
