Where Do I (or We) Belong?, Posted by Jim
Next week I’ll be in Chicago attending the Counselors of Real Estate (CRE Designation) Meetings. There are rumblings from a few of their members that wish to disaffiliate from the National Association of Realtors®. I am a designated Member of the Counselors and find it difficult to understand why anyone would want to leave NAR. In fact, there is a large contingency of its Membership that is very active at NAR®.
Becoming a CRE first requires that you be invited to join. Prior to becoming a CRE, there is significant work done to see if you have actually participated in counseling and to what extent your expertise, ethics and general real estate background “fit” into their membership profile. The Counselor’s are highly respected people that give much back to our industry. Being awarded their designation was humbling and rewarding at the same time.
Much of what the National Association does benefits the Counselors in the same manner it benefits anyone else involved in real property ownership, sales, leasing, appraising, management and counseling. NAR® works to the benefit of anyone that toils within the industry in many, many ways. Did I mention that it benefits all of us in many ways?
I am proud to be a Realtor®. I’m also proud to be a Member of the Counselors. Both provide help and support to me for different reasons. My friends at the Counselors (and I have many) need to put positive energy into things that can help the Membership. So, the answer to my opening question is that I belong to both and I believe the Counselor’s Membership should too. - Jim Helsel, 2008 Treasurer
