Improve your volunteer teams

Why does your team exist? The Charity Channel offers suggestions to improve your volunteer teams. "Under the guidance of the Team Leader, the team needs to set clear and compelling goals and strategies for achieving those goals, both for the individual and the team as a whole. As a leader, be clear about your organization’s values and the values of the team." Take advantage of all of the skills of your volunteers and cross-train for greater effectiveness.

Improve your presentations

Are staff nodding off during your presentations? The Canadian Society of Association Executives provides tips for making your presentations the best ever. Find your key message--make it short and stick to it. Tailor your message to your audience. "Even in the absence of a critical issue, people in the audience need to relate to what you are saying – "What does this have to do with me?" "Why is she telling me this?" "What exactly am I being asked to do?" Don't leave those questions unanswered. Learn as much as you can about your audience, and determine how you need to tailor your message to them." Finally, hone your personal style of public speaking.

Baby boomer volunteers

Baby Boomers require special handling as volunteers. They are very busy--respect their schedules and offer flexible volunteer opportunities. Treat them as adults while training and during volunteer activities. Operate in an organized, effective manner so their valuable time is not wasted. Finally, make volunteer activities meaningful and important, not just writing out nametags and stuffing envelopes.
